With the time a religious syncretism was created in Puerto Rico in which black craftsmen designed and made different type of masks that represented their many beliefs and deities. These managed to blend with Christian practice. This mask making tradition evolved and began developing its own peculiarities, particularly in coastal towns where the African population predominated.  Today, teaching and confection masks is Lydia Perez's hobby.  See her masks.
